Barefoot Ballet follows the amazing trajectory of Mercedes Baptista, the first black Brazilian Classical ballet's prima ballerina of the 1950's. She successfully auditioned for the Municipal Theater Ballet Company in the City of Rio de Janeiro and became the first black artist to perform on the stage of the Municipal Theater. Baptista was particularly gifted in teaching other minority students. Her genius for choreographing dance sequences that relied on narrative and acting abilities rather than technique was what she became known for. Public and critics were able to transcend racial prejudice and responded with genuine pleasure and appreciation to the Afro Ballet's exciting dance sequences.
