Havana film festival New York pays tribute to cuban filmmaker Rigoberto Lopez, who died this past January 23rd in La Habana leaving behind a long list of well-known documentaries and the Traveling Caribbean Film Showcase, which he founded and was head of since 2006. Rigoberto was born in La Habana on July 6th of 1947, most of Rigoberto’s work were awarded among different international film award ceremonies.
Rigoberto Lopez, who also was a correspondent for the Angola war, said once that his cuban roots transcended his caribbean escence in some ways. This perhaps is shown in his feature documentary Yo soy, del son a la salsa (1996), where he goes into depth about the Caribbean; its music roots, the history, and its culture. Here he goes through a long journey from the origins of the son in Santiago de Cuba to the greatest contemporary Salsa hits around the world. This co-production between US- Cuba, made Lopez win a number of international awards and his first Grand Coral award at the Festival de la Habana.
