Jorge Luis Sánchez passed away in January at the age of 65, leaving a void among the Afro-Cuban filmmakers of his generation. He joined ICAIC in 1981 as a shooting assistant and later became an Assistant Director. In 1987, he created a video workshop for young filmmakers without access to ICAIC. He directed documentaries such as Dónde está Casal and El Fanguito, and in 2006 premiered El Benny, about musician Benny Moré, which won multiple awards, including Best Film at the Havana Film Festival. Buscando a Casal, his last feature film, is honored by HFFNY. As he once said: "An artist is nothing more than a manipulator of good, to improve humanity, for the progress of life."
