Abandoned by their servants, members of an aristocratic family in Cuba are forced to fend for themselves in this classic of Cuban cinema, digitally restored by the Academy. At the triumph of the Revolution, a family of the high bourgeoisie decide to isolate themselves in their mansion and ignore the changes that occurred in the country. They assume that things will soon return to as they were. They live the material and moral disintegration, in a historical regression.

Tomás Gutiérrez Alea

Generally regarded as Cuba’s foremost filmmaker, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (1928-1996) first rose to prominence with Memories of Underdevelopment (1968) and later found a wider international audience with Strawberry and Chocolate- the first and only Cuban film nominated for an Oscar in 1994. Influenced by Italian neorealism and an early love of cinema, Gutiérrez Alea’s work created a sharp post-revolutionary Cuba analysis.

Influenciado por el neorrealismo italiano y un temprano amor al cine, las obras de Gutiérrez Alea crearon un agudo análisis posrevolucionario de Cuba.
