Filmmaker and former punk artist Mabel Valdiviezo reunites with her family in Peru after 16 years of silence, confronting haunting childhood memories and a troubled past as an undocumented immigrant in the United States. Offering intimate access to the artist and her vibrant "photo-paintings" of the family, Prodigal Daughter is a cinematic exploration of family bonds, belonging, and the transformative power of art through the narrative of human rights, gender, and immigration.

La cineasta y artista punk Mabel Valdiviezo se reúne con su familia en Perú después de 16 años de silencio, enfrentándose a inquietantes recuerdos de su infancia y a un pasado problemático como inmigrante indocumentada en Estados Unidos. Ofreciendo acceso íntimo a la artista y sus vibrantes "foto-pinturas" de la familia, Hija Pródiga es una exploración poética de los lazos familiares, la pertenencia y el poder transformador del arte a través de la narrativa de los derechos humanos, el género y la inmigración.

Mabel Valdiviezo is an award-winning Latine filmmaker whose work explores migration, gender equality, and healing justice. Her credits include “Carlos Baron, Poeta Pan,” documentary short, (PBS/KQED), “Soledad is Gone Forever,” short (LALIFF), and “The Water’s Muse,” experimental short. “Prodigal Daughter” is her first feature.
